 Name and title:

Chaoming Jian, Assistant Professor, Physics

Academic focus:

Theoretical condensed matter physics

Current research project:

Currently, I am trying to develop and apply new theoretical tools to investigate the properties of quantum matters that are highly entangled and strongly interacting. In particular, I am trying to combine the ideas from condensed matter physics, high energy physics, quantum information and mathematics to study quantum systems that exhibit exotic topological properties and fractionalizations.

Previous positions:

  • Postdoctoral Researcher, Microsoft Station Q, Santa Barbara, California, 2017-2018, 2019-2020
  • Gordon & Betty Moore Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow, Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics, University of California, Santa Barbara, 2016-2017, 2018-2019

Academic background:

  • Ph.D., Physics, Stanford University, 2016
  • B.S., Fundamental science, Tsinghua University, 2011

Last book read:

“The Three-Body Problem” by Liu Cixin

In your own time/when not working:

I enjoy playing badminton, running and cooking.

Courses you’re most looking forward to teaching:

Solid State Physics, Statistical Mechanics

What most excites you about Cornell:

I am most excited about the collaborative, friendly and vibrant community here. There will be a lot of opportunities to explore different directions of research. Also, the scenery around is beautiful!
